fierce, destructive, chaos She rages
striking with flash and flood
“Dominion?”
She laughs with Earth-quaking whirlwinds
brandishing rainbows under dark twisted sky
Storm clouds loom and twist overhead causing my to heart flutter. Far from the eros evoked in my being by the mystifying landscape of the desert and Her beloveds, this fluttering is all fear. i have never done well in strong destructive storms, and now monsoon season is upon the high desert. As the sky flashes white-hot with rage-filled power, and the ground quakes with impact, i cower, trembling in terror… tears, sweat, and snot free-flowing, wailing, pleading for the storm to pass.
Here in the high desert, the storms are short-lived but fierce. They change whole landscapes in a flash, just ask the arroyos or the forests. They’ll tell you the ancient story of the untamable, uncontrollable Wild. Our human stories have long told us that She, the Wild, was something to be subdued for She was only destructive and dangerous, a seductress, a killer of men.
While She, manifested in these desert storms, has the potential to destroy and is certainly dangerous if you do not honor Her power and find yourself caught unsheltered under Her blackened skies, She also makes the Earth fertile and ready for new life to emerge. Her rainfall must be fierce so as to pierce the hardened desert ground, reaching the roots of these Beings of fire. Such is the nature of the Wild; She moves in a chaotic dance of death and life, destruction and creation.
Cowering in terror from this recent bout of destructive and creative Wildness, i know there is much to learn from the visceral fear that comes from truly facing the Wild. Only in this state of fear do i relinquish any perceived notion of control and fully submit to the awesome power before me. i know we humans have it all wrong. Dominion was never true.
O Formidable Wild, i surrender my being to You
O Formidable Wild
Who manifests ferocity with
fiery flashes and floods
whirlwinds and wails
unearthing roots and rocks
transforming whole landscapes
destroying and creating from chaos
in my trembling, quaking fear
from facing Your awesome power
i surrender my whole being to You
